Memorising and Embedding Quotations

Memorising and Embedding Quotations

Edusites Slices show you how to enable students to consider how to ‘use’ quotations in their exam responses. However the quotations need to be placed in long term memory to be available during the exam.

What are some of the best ways of helping students to do this?

Memorising and Embedding Quotations

In class

  • Quotations in context.
  • As a group students can be given a single quotation which they then apply to a range of different questions illustrating how some quotations can be part of their ‘essentials range’ for each text or poem.
  • Use quotations as the title of your lessons!
  • Crunching texts to identify key words and key quotations
  • Fill the gap in quotations
Memorising and Embedding Quotations

Do it NOW

  • Effective use of time!
  • Name that text!
  • Where is this quotation from? – include poetry and prose
  • YouTube is useful for listening to poets reading their own poems. Have this on a loop as students come into the room. Take away the visual aspect of YouTube and you can ask the students to identify the poet and the name of the poem.
