OCR A Level Sample Student Workbook

OCR A Level Sample Student Workbook

Edusites units are a three tiered learning approach including Online Lesson-by-Lesson Slides and the Teacher Scheme of Learning and Student workbook which are are interlinked – each are dependent on the other and should be used together to provide students and teachers with an in depth learning experience.

This is the NotePack for use with Edusites Unit 8 GCE A Level Media Studies. All of the notes refer to the content of this unit of work. They are designed to help you create a useful set of notes to help you with understanding the ideas covered in this examination, to support you in your Home Learning and be a clear revision aid in your preparations for the final examinations that you are required to take. You need to keep in mind at all times the examination board Assessment Objectives that your work is to be assessed with.

AO1

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
  1. the theoretical framework of media
  2. contexts of media and their influence on media products and processes.

AO2

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework of media to:
  1. analyse media products, including in relation to their contexts and through the use of academic theories
  2. evaluate academic ideas and arguments
  3. make judgements and draw conclusions

AO3

  • Create cross-media products for an intended audience, by applying knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework of media to communicate meaning

Each of the boards that award A level Media Studies qualifications state that you do not have to have studied the subject at KS4 but there is an expectation that students will have an interest in the ideas and area of study the subject.

This is the basis from which the units 7-12 all work. If you have studied the media at KS4, then many of the areas we will be looking at in AS and Advanced Level will be familiar to you but not repetitive.

However:

  1. We will be looking in greater depth, with the expectation that your responses are more sophisticated and detailed than at KS4 and you will be pushed to show this
  2. Also, the opportunity to review previous learning will be useful to you as we push into the higher level of study required at AS & Advanced Level

We continue our Advanced Level learning with Unit 8 and the study of OCR Component Paper 1 Section B.

Lesson 1

The OCR Examination Structure

There is so much to cover in all of the OCR Set Products for 2019 and so many possible directions and hypotheses that could be seized on that, in these Edusites OCR Exam Units, I can only offer a starting point for the more detailed individual research and analysis required of you by OCR. Remember, the work on these Set Products is about your ideas and your research. In these lessons I offer guidance and strategies to enable you to start to apply your acquired learning and understanding of the theoretical models from the rest of the Media course.

You are advised of the need to explore similar products, especially in the run up to the examination. If you do this, you should ensure your ideas and analysis are as contemporary and as wide ranging and thorough as possible. A lot can happen in the next year or so - keep up to date with these:

  • How the different modes and language associated with different media forms communicate multiple meanings
  • How the combination of elements of media language influence meaning
  • How developing technologies affect media language
  • The codes and conventions of media forms and products, including the processes through which media language develops as genre
  • The dynamic and historically relative nature of genre
  • The processes through which meanings are established through intertextuality
  • How audiences respond to and interpret the above aspects of media language
