Starter/Loop Activity (5 Minutes)

Slide 2 Task 13A Pupils asked to respond to the task from the Lesson Resource: Analysis of The i front page. Students to write response in books/folders.

Prepare the Learning (5 Minutes)

Share the objectives. Revisit terms/issues/ideas from previous lessons learning as is deemed necessary from the previous plenary feedback or from marking student work. Q&A on loop activity.

Construct the Learning (20 Minutes)

Slides 4 -6 We now need to consider why ownership of newspapers is so desirable, given the issues of profitability and decline. Slide 5 offers some ideas that ought to be thought about and these are then expanded on Slides 5-6 about The Independent going online only and the business concept of vertical and horizontal integration.

Slides 7-8 Students should research in detail the Johnston media group and some starting ideas are laid out here.

Application of Learning (25 Minutes discussion/individual work)

Slide 9 Task 13B Analysis of website edition of The i. This work is a necessary part of their research portfolio. Slide 10 Task 13C Requires analysis of the Editor’s Matrix of News. They should find comparisons with the online editions of the Mail and consider the construction of the audience.

I would use this as a timed response in the lesson to the two printed extracts or those of your own. Serves as a good baseline assessment.

Slide 12 Task 13E Compare the print edition and the online edition for the same day use the prompts to scaffold learning.
