Do you and your students love film?
We are surrounded by moving images which create narratives that change and reinforce the way we see the world. Studying film gives you the power of a time machine as the medium itself enables young people to engage in narratives for other cultures and times.
Why do we need to study film?
Our exposure to moving images has transformed along with the development of computing technology. From simple to follow YouTube tutorials to innovative world cinema young people are exposed to the medium of moving images every day. This exposure means that Film Studies is an excellent conduit to engage our young people in the study of the techniques, history and impact of moving images. Students are shown how representation creates meaning and links to other aspects of our understanding of culture. Students will see how film makers use representation to present stories. Through a variety of schools of thought students are encouraged to ask questions about their own thinking about culture and its representation through film. Through a variety of film case studies students learn to denote the similarities and differences between films from contrasting cultures. By studying contextualising film and reading film students are given the tools to consider how they would develop and apply this learning to their own film making.
